The Taxidermist

Today (2025) Werner Beckmann remains a highly sought-after specialist – even after many years as a taxidermist at the Westphalian Museum of Natural History in Münster. He is not only in his chosen profession, but also as a jazz, blues, and soul saxophonist.

Anyone with questions about the restoration of vintage Mercedes 300 SLs is also in good hands with Werner. The following images describe the preparation of the skeleton of a porpoise washed up on the North Sea island of Juist.

To do this, WB first roughly dissected the animal in the pathology department of the seal sanctuary in Norddeich. The video below shows this procedure in individual images.

In subsequent steps, the complete exposure of the bones was carried out by maceration before the skeleton was reassembled.

Finally, WB assembled the complete skeleton in an exhibition pavilion in front of the National Park House on Juist.

Werner Beckmann ist heute (2025) - auch nach seiner langjährigen Tätigkeit als Tierpräparator im Westfälischen Naturkundemuseum in Münster - ein noch immer sehr gefragter Spezialist. Das nicht nur in seinem erlernten Beruf , sondern auch als Jazz-, Blues- und Soul- Saxofonist.

Wer Fragen zur Aufarbeitung von Mercedes 300 SL Oldtimern hat, ist bei Werner ebenfalls gut aufgehoben.

Die folgenden Bilder beschreiben die Präparierung des Skeletts eines an der Nordsee-Insel Juist angespülten Schweinswal.

Dazu hat WB das Tier zunächst in der Pathologie der Robben-Auffangstation in Norddeich grob zerlegt.

In weiteren Schritten erfolgte vor dem Zusammensetzen des Skeletts die komplette Freilegung der Knochen mittels Mazeration.
